“Beautiful Bermuda”

Grape Bay Beach Hotel

I agree with most of the other reviewers so I will skip on to some things that weren't mentioned. First, get the ocean view room. It's worth the extra money. The beautiful view was the best thing about our room. The room's fridge is very small but valuable as we picked up drinks from the Mini Mart close by. Our shower provided not much more than a small stream of water. The Sapori Restaurant wasn't worth the money and there are lots of good restaurants in Hamilton. The continental breakfast didn't change for the 6 days we were there so it got boring after a couple of days. Overall, the hotel needs some maintenance. Paint, new hall carpet, new lawnchairs, pressure washing the courtyard, that sort of thing. Staff were friendly but management needs to spend a few bucks keeping the place up.
Onto some other tips to make the most of your trip. Take the ferries around Hamilton harbour. The views are breathtaking. Plan a picnic at Horseshoe Bay. One of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. The water is the bluest you will ever see. The Royal Naval Dockyard was an interesting historical exhibit that is good for a half day's tour and if you get bored, there's always the dolphin park there for amusement. St. George's is a good walking tour and they have a few nice restaurants. Wouldn't bother with Botanical Gardens or Tobacco Bay Beach. Have a rum swizzle at the Swizzle Inn, the oldest restaurant on the island (they have a new one on the South Shore). South Shore has beautiful beaches and hotels. Dinners were excellent at Hog Penny, Pickled Onion, Bolero and Lobster Pot but be prepared to pay. My wife and I split a meal and with a drink each and the tab was $50+. People were friendly and polite and we felt safe most everywhere we went. All in all, we loved Bermuda and highly recommend it.

“Ok if you are on a budget”

Grape Bay Beach Hotel

2 of 5 stars
New Jersey
Mar 16, 2008

If I'd been expecting what I got when I arrived at this hotel, it may not have been a big deal. I guess I should have been happy that it was but a short walk to the beach and that it did have beautiful surroundings, but the rooms were just...dingy. The rug in the hallway was gross and there was peeling wallpaper and paint everywhere. We had two double beds when we arrived and I convinced my fiance to ask them to give us a king bed. They did and this room was thankfully cleaner and not as ragged. The tubs had hard water stains...etc...

The front desk staff (when they were actually in the front office, and they were not at all times) were very nice and accomodating as well as other staff members who were also very friendly. I was very dissapointed as the photos of the hotel are very misleading. This hotel is ok if you are on a budget and just need somewhere to sleep. Oh, and don't get to the breakfast "buffet" after 9 AM...Twice there was only juice and a croissant left and once...only juice!

    • Disliked — Meager breakfast, ragged rooms.

“A great small hotel”

Grape Bay Beach Hotel

We stayed at the Grape Bay Beach hotel for a week in early March. The location is great, being close to Hamilton, the capital and the bus service that takes you there. The beach is a 5 minute walk, the market is a 15 minute walk and a small mall is also within walking distance. The staff at the hotel are extremly helpful. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who does not expect the Hilton at these prices. Great for couples with or without kids,

“a wart on a beautiful face”

Grape Bay Beach Hotel

Mar 4, 2008

This was our first trip to Bermuda, which we loved at first sight, but we had our first doubts about the hotel we'd booked - Grape Bay - when we realized just how remote it was, and particularly how far from the main road. When we arrived and asked about making that walk, the manager - only minimally friendly, which is rare on this welcoming, wonderful island - told us she advised against it after dark: she didn't mean muggers, she meant the danger of being wiped out by a car on a narrow, winding pitch-dark lane. The alternative was an expensive cab-ride.
Our room was in an annex, where the corridor's carpets and walls were worn and stained. One room-key wouldn't open the door at all, the other only with a struggle. Inside, the dark, dingy room looked like it hadn't seen a paint-brush in decades, though the hotel site claims a makeover. The room's large size just made the furniture seem more sparse. The curtains didn't meet. The floor was dirty. I tried to re-program the safe, but it was broken. The filthy balcony offered an ocean GLIMPSE. The place stank of mold. We dropped our suitcases and went out, deciding during our walk to the main road that this depressing hotel would absolutely ruin our vacation, so we found a nice hotel called The Wharf (a quick ferry trip across from Hamilton), negotiated a good rate there, went back to Grape Bay and checked out. The manager was gone and the young woman at the desk knew nothing, could do nothing. Our cab driver said she knew of several other people who'd done the same thing, and that the hotel had been let out to college students and had never recovered. I knew in my heart of hearts that we'd never get our money back, and so it's proven. We rang three times while on the island but couldn't catch the manager. Subsequently, after five calls through hotels.com, we've got nowhere. But you know what? Dropping that hotel at a total loss to ourselves was the best thing we did. I just hope our mistake might save others from the same fate. Don't even think of staying at Grape Bay unless your ONLY consideration is price. It's really a dump.

“we had a great time”

Grape Bay Beach Hotel

3 of 5 stars
Arlington, VA

We've travelled around the world quite a bit and this was a fairly decent hotel. Desk clerks were great - night and day. We lost a package in a taxi and they called around and got it back for us. The breakfast got a little wearing after a week - but hey, we had an ocean view for $99 a night! There is about a 1km walk to the bus stop. Bus and ferry service in Bermuda is most excellent - buy a pass for the sheer convenience. You are right on the Rail Trail too - so you can walk to Elbow Beach - stop at the Modern Mart to pick up some cold drinks and lunch on the way. We're not in the best of shape and my husband does turn 60 this spring but we didn't find it difficult walking into Hamilton, the Botanic Gardens, etc - a lot of fun. We loved riding the ferries as the sun went down, eating at the Coco Reef (behind the college) and walking all over Bermuda. The room was a nice size, clean, not modern but no plumbing problems except a shortage of water at times - but the whole island is in a drought - so this is pretty typical stuff for the tropics.
