Riu Taino

Just returned from Punta Cana and stayed at Riu Taino. In the Riu web site thay claim to be a 5 star hotel. But it seems to be a 2 week hotel.

The staff and service there was very rude and the kids club was always closed.

We had asked for a glass of water and the waitress claims that the hotel has no water to drink...so she does not have to get us the glass of water.

The rooms where we stayed was very small and they had broken funiture...they sure do need a MAJOR repairs.

You can say I was traveling with a 3 year old child and the Riu DID not take care of me or my family. This was the very first trip for my daughter and it turned out to be a nightmare.

I would not recommend this hotel to anybody, spend your money some other hotel.

“Just Ok”

Riu Taino

Booked through orbitz. After 1 day prices dropped 100 dollars then went up to 1200 dollars then back down....It is like the stock market.
Pre-arranged ground transportation round-trip but don't count on the trip back, it is near impossible to arrange the trip back but Ok. Since I was all the time at the beach/eating/pool/disco who has time to arrange the trip back to the airport. The area this hotel is in is great, with the right amount of people, always loungers available at the beach. The pool was for early birds but there were other two pools that always had loungers but were almost empty and boring without swim-up bars. The beer at the Riu-Taino swimup bar was very decent and extremely cold.

Food: Was Ok, nothing spectacular. Avoided everything that was not sizzling hot due to previous DR all inclusive illnesses. This time as I read in some websites to eat yogurts weeks before which is suppose to increase the stomach flora and increase your immunity and didn't get sick. So this is my first time I didn't get diarrhea. I don't know if it was the yogurts I eat before the trip(its supposed to be 2 weeks before) I just did it the week before or was due to the fact that only eat sizzling hot items. The pizza was very good. The rest average. Nice service at the Taino Restaurant.

Drinks: I had very few with Ice , so I guess the Ice is really from purified water. Didn't had the fruity stuff , just beer during the day. It is too hot to drink something else and maybe a few whiskey sodas at night. They were not watered down and never waited more than 1 minute to get a drink.

Disco: It is Ok and was free for the whole stay.

Hotel Room: Clean and nice balcony. Some friendly ants in the bathroom but not a problem. They were really fine, not 5 star but how much time do you spend there. Nice minibar with coke, soda's Gin, Rum, Brand and Vodka. Not bad but it is that Classic Brand that tastes like cough syrup but does the work. Nothing to eat.

People: Hotel staff was very attentive, No one was rude at all. Almost all the guests were from spain

Entertainment: Boring stuff. A few decent dance shows but don't expect much.

Beach :The beach was fine, try the free water sports. Bring a lot of Sun protection the Sun is a killer there. Even with SPF 50 you'll cook. Great place for a beach walk , this beach is huge with plenty of resorts that you can go visit right and left but the sun will cook you before you can see them all. The place feels very safe, just stay away from the beach vendors offering you illegal stuff. I was bothered only once....just walk away and say no. May cute topless ladies. So if you are sensitive to that beware.

The Punta Cana airport is very nice, The service to get out was fast.

All in all, it was an ok trip but after a while it was boring. So maybe going there with a group of friends would make it be better. If you want to relax this might be a good option but don't expect much fun.

Riu Taino

My husband and I, who are both in our early 30's just returned from 5 days at the Riu Taino. We had a lovely time. We booked the trip through Sears Travel Canada.
Just to echo everyone else...it is an older resort and the rooms are a bit run down, but you spend so little time in them it doesn't matter.
Our room was spotless at all times and we were left a cute towel figure everyday. The mini bar guy only comes every other day, but ours came daily. We tipped our maid approx $20 US for the week and left her a gift every day. She loved it and gave us a big hug the day before we left. We tipped the mini bar $2US per day, which is probably why he returned daily.
The front desk staff were perfect as well. Always very helpful. They phoned to check on our stay twice during our 5 days and on day two we came back to our room to find a bottle the local spirit and a cermaic souvenior figurine. Checking in and out was flawless and took about 10 minutes total.
The food was okay. Not great, not bad. We expected the same quality from other Riu Resorts and did not find that at all. But, it served it's purpose! We only tried the Italian Ala Carte restaurant and were quite disappointed by that. There wasn't really any Italian Food, but that really wasn't the issue. I ordered the fillet of beef medium rare. When it arrived it was in a pool of blood red juices. Not just a little...the entire plate looked like I was hacking into a life animal! It was a little much to take! I just stuck to the limited buffett items for dinner. The veggie soup was very good! My husband ordered the pork tenderloin and he had little complaint. The tiramisu though..SO YUMMY! For the rest of our trip we stuck to the buffett dining. The serving staff was perfectly perfect. Remembering what we drank every night and having it waiting for us at our "regular" table when we arrived.
The animation team work so hard and do such an amazing job! They keep you quite entertained doing every thing from water polo and the very popular aqua gym during the day to the shows at night. Our favorite was the disco night. So funny and so much fun! We took part in the bingo game every eveing and even quite enjoyed the childrens "show" even though we do not have any of our own.
The beach for us was flawless. We had a great time hanging over our inflatable rafts and bobbing in the endless waves. Neither of us snorkle, but I could see where it might be pretty uneventful for those who do. The water was fairly shallow for quite aways out and we never saw a single critter. But...it is still the warmest bluest water i've ever seen and we spent a great deal of time there.
We did not take an excursions or activities as we were happy hanging out on the beach. Parasailing and banana boating were quite popular though!
We loved Carribbean Street and that we didn't have to leave the resort to go shopping. There really is not a whole lot around the town. It looked as though you would have to travel a bit to get to restaurants or bars. Our bus driver told us that the population is about 10,000 half of that being non Dominican tourist who decided to move there.
We were allowed to eat breakfast/lunch and play at the other Riu Resorts we walked through, but found the beach at the Taino to be the nicest, so we stuck with it. If we every chose to stay again tough I think we would maybe wonder over to the others for breakfast and lunch.
We really have absolutely no complaints though. The staff are amazing and we were given exactly what we were promised and expected. They work really hard for you at the Taino, they deserve to be appreciated for their time and effort. We were most impressed with their staff.

“Just loved it.”

Riu Taino

We're a 26 year old couple from Toronto, Canada, though originally from Europe. That is why we really enjoyed the fact that most of the tourists at the Taino are Europeans, who in our opinion tend to control their children better than Americans, so even though there were lots of small children at the resort, they were all pretty quiet and did not bother us at all.

ROOM. We spent a week there, the room was beautiful, large, one queen bed, very clean and nice.

FOOD. The food was great and seemed to always be fresh and cooked properly. We ate so much that we each gained about 3 pounds yet never experienced any problems whatsoever. People who say the food is repetitive are probably talking about the burgers and pizza they eat, because the food isn't all that repetitive, and even so the huge amount of different (exotic and european) dishes make it almost impossible to eat the same food every day (unless you insist eating burgers, as I was saying).

I highly recommend the "La Proa" a la carte restaurant.

BEACHES. We wandered around the resorts and realized the Taino has the most natural and beautiful beaches of them all. Sunbeds are not the best, but they're comfortable enough.

POOLS. The pools were a bit on the small side compared to the other hotels, but we were there to spend time at the beach not at the pool, so we really didn't care about that.

STAFF. The staff is extremely friendly and nice. We always tipped them and that might have been a factor. They each speak several languages, including English (though Spanish and German are their strengths). Also, on a side note, the Dominicans are really beautiful people.

ENTERTAINMENT. There were a lot of activities around the resort all day long, contests (darts, horseshoe throwing, etc.), aerobics, beach volleyball, as well as all sorts of games. Night shows were nice though a bit childish, yet very entertaining. Charlie Lopez, the main entertainer, is a natural talent.

LOCATION. The location is also good, it's close to the Caribbean Street, that has a lot of shops. Its proximity to the airport was also a plus for us.

All in all we had a great time and we are definitely going back to the Riu Taino someday.

We had such a great time. First thing - I asked for a room near the beach - and while none were available when we arrived, the next morning we were given a 2nd story room as close to the beach as you can get! It was superb! We are not your typical vacationers, I think, in that we enjoy doing things - being active - and using the ocean rather than a pool. We also are picky eaters in that we like to eat healthy food. We were not disappointed. While the menu does not vary much at the buffet, there is always plenty to choose from. Each night they had more than one fish entre, plus chicken, pork, ham, etc. along with fruit, vegetables, fresh breads, desserts, etc. Breakfast they had just about anything you can imagine - except oatmeal - and the fruit smoothies were the best!! But the buffet closes at 10am - then only a marginal continental b'fast until 1pm - so don't miss the buffet or you go hungry....... The waiters were exceptional. We ate at the Italian restaurant - a really nice change of pace - and also there was a night with dancing and special Caribbean food - and that too, was a nice change of pace. You can also walk over to the Riu Bamboo at any meal and eat there. Their buffets were larger, offered a different variety of food and I'd suggest going over there at least once. Watersports - not touched on much in these forums - so I will since we used daily. There are watersports buildings with 2-3 catamarins, sailboat, numerous windsurfers and kayaks about every 200 feet or less. You go there and sign up for an hour usage. Best to go the day before you want to use a catamarin as it fills up as the day goes on. But you can sign up every day for a week all at once if you want to - or go one hour one place and walk down the beach and sign up for an hour at the next place. The catamarins are in demand, but the other equipment is not, so the hour rule isn't enforced I don't think. Punta Cana doesn't have strong winds like the north coast and the beach is such that it's only shallow a short ways out and then deepens quickly. Thus, it makes it hard to learn to windsurf or to even get started. Noone ever planed there. We had a blast with the catamarins. Had never sailed one before, but they are easy to do and quite safe. There are reefs galore out there, however, so you have to watch scraping the boat. We actually surfed waves with them. It was fun. The equipment is in decent shape - some of the windsurf boards have missing footstraps and such, and there were no harnesses. The snorkelling was just ok. The Taino has a grassy reef enclosed in their swimming area, and fish will flock to you looking for food (I brought out bread and mashed bananas in a baggie to feed them the 2nd time.) But, the reef is pretty much dead so if you go anywhere else, there's no fish, no life to speak of. We also snorkelled WAY out near the wreck offshore (had to watch out for boats speeding by..... and that was neat - got to only about 40 feet of water and clear as a bell. Nice reef formations, but its pretty dead. Worth doing tho. Ok - the rooms were...... decent. Never had trouble with power, airconditioning or hot water. There ARE two beds tho - one double bed and one twin. We had no problem sleeping on the double, but for some people, it might present a problem. We preferred Taino over Bamboo in that the rooms of the Bamboo were quite a distance walk from the beach as opposed to our room - a few steps. Otherwise, the Bamboo has several advantages in that the nightly entertainment facility is an open air one - so the smokers don't bother you like they do at Taino's facility which is a closed room; the buffets are larger and have more variety - plus they greet you with a Tequila Sunrise upon entry at dinner; and the lobby area is gorgeous. But, the vendors were there more frequently than at Taino. Oh, vendors are not a problem at the beach. They may walk by, but don't stop to bug you. Only stop if you ask. We didn't see much of the nightly entertainment - for one, it was smoky in there, and for another, the talent is mainly locals - and while they CAN dance, once you see them, it's basically the same thing in different costumes. The Michael Jackson show tho was superb. We only caught the tail end and wished we'd seen it all. Regarding tipping - these employees make about $50US a week and work 10-12 hrs a day and do a super job. We ended up tipping many of the waiters and waitresses a $1 here and there - and once gave a guy $5 - then realized that's half his wages for one day! not a big deal to us, but a BIG deal to the Dominicans. So, don't be stingy, We didn't know it, but you can change your large US bills for $1 bills at the front desk. They are happy to do that for you, as they know where they are going.... Taxi from the airport cost us about $33 with tip; gas is close to $6/gallon there. We also took the public bus to Santo Domingo and then another one up to Cabarete. Email me if you have any Q's. We also loved the dancing they had at night - a pool and beach party; aerobics in the sand in the morning; Merengue lesson in the afternoon. We did not go to the Island Sanoa. It is a two hour bus ride each way - and didn't want to spend our vacation time on a bus. Hear you can take a catamarin tho. Now - That might be a great way to go!
