First let me state that the year prior to going to sunscape I went to Cancun, Mexico (Grand Oasis, A+ trip & hotel). Since Cancun was so much fun, I was expecting a GREAT time in Dominican as well. My friends and I were really excited for a big 10 day trip. We are all easy going and have the motto "A vacation will be what you make out of it". Certainly we tried our best and did not succeed.
As soon as I got there I was disappointed. The A/C in the rooms would not get cold, the food made me sick (literally, every time I ate I had to run to the bathroom), the place was understaffed, and there was nowhere at all to go outside of the resort. The place was very boring. The only thing I enjoyed there was meeting Europeans since I'm an American and the place was full of them. The grounds flooded when it rained and I saw plenty of people slip & fall and hurt themselves (a few badly). I'd advise older folks to be very careful here. There was mildew all over the place creating a terrible smell at night because it was humid out. I also have to say that at dinner we would speak to couples who were there on honeymoons and everyone we spoke to agreed with us that this place was just not worth the money, and that there was very little if anything to do. The highlight of the day was sitting around in the sun and at night going to the disco which was pretty dead before midnight.
The biggest problem I had at sunscape was we started to find items missing from out rooms. There are safes in every room, but who can honestly lock up ALL valuables every time they leave the room? The rooms were cleaned around 1-2 times a day and a camera of ours was stolen. We made a complaint to the management who sent in security guards to DESTROY our rooms and search for the camera because they thought we were lying to them. What kind of service is this? Granted we are "younger" 20, 21, 21, 24, 25 but in reality we are fully grown mature adults. After destroying my friend’s room (whose camera was stolen) they insisted on destroying mine and my friends since we came together. After this was all said and done, we asked to speak to the hotel manager because we weren't happy with the hotel at all. (A/C was broken and it was 100 degrees in room, but wouldn't relocated us ... camera was stolen ... security ripped apart our rooms ... shower tubs in BOTH rooms were clogged and would not drain ... ETC) 2 days go by, and were out on the beach on the nicest day of weather we have had since being there and we get the call to go to the lobby to go speak to the management. On the letter it stated that they wanted to see all of us, so we all rounded up our stuff and went to the lobby. We sat down; A LOT of Spanish was spoken instead of English even though everyone there spoke English perfectly. We all looked at each other knowing that something was going on that shouldn't of been happening...
...The manager sits down and asks us what’s the problem, so we tell him the problems were having and how no one cares and that we are not satisfied after spending over $6,000 in total to go to his hotel for 10 days. He speaks in Spanish again to his security guard and says "Ok, well if you are not happy you are free to leave". What? Free to leave where? Before we had a chance to speak he goes "Actually, you can go to your rooms and pack your bags and you can all leave now". WE WERE KICKED OUT. Yup, kicked out of sunscape for making a complaint with management about a camera being stolen by a cleaning woman. After this happened we were given 1 hour to have everything ready to go and we were followed around by security who would stand outside of our door waiting for us to get down packing to escort us out. They relocated us to a hotel that was about 45 minutes away and nowhere near as nice as sunscape. We still had 2 more days on vacation, and the place we were relocated to was so terrible that we stayed in the rooms and watched movies until the end of vacation. It was absolutely a terrible experience & I don’t think I will ever return to the DR. This summer, we are going back to Cancun for another 10 days. It was a much better trip.
