We just got back from a week stay at the Buccaneer and overall we really had a great time. We travelled with our two children 14 and 17. I would say the right word for the Buccaneer is "charming". It may not be for everyone because it is a small, quaint, quiet resort. There is no island music or outdoor bars on the beach. They do not come around to your lounge chairs to take your drink or lunch orders. They have two pools but they are very small and we honestly never used them once. Putting those few things aside, the place really has a lot going for it. Our room (Oceanside, 341) was beautiful, with a great view and located in between the two popular beaches, Mermaid and Grotto. The beaches are sort of on the small side but very pretty, quiet and relaxing,You can snorkel right off the beach at Grotto there is a reef right there with some really beautiful fish.We were there during spring break, the resort was very full but it never felt crowded. You never had to rush to save lounge chairs in the morning, there were plenty. They also have snorkel equipment, canoes, rafts, boogie boards, frisbees etc.. available at both beaches all for free and they never ran out of anything. They also have lots of tennis courts, a mini basketball court and ping pong on the property right by the beach which is nice. There is also a really nice 2 mile walking/jogging path on the property that roams by the ocean and through some of the golf course, it's nice to do before breakfast. Breakfast was included and nicely done, not too many choices like some of the big resorts but more than enough. We had two meals there for dinner which were pretty bad, I would really suggest leaving the property at night for dinner, it was much better and much more fun. My kids were reluctant at first because of some of the posts about the town, but we just hopped in a cab and got dropped off and picked up at some really fun cute places filled with people doing just the same as us. Kendricks was great, we went there twice, Doogans was fun and pretty good too. Another place called Baccus is supposed to be good but we never made it there. The cab drivers were all very pleasant and really added to our trip. Every night at the hotel they do have live music at the bar area in the restaurant at the Terrace restaurant which is nice but it's usually a quiet one man type of thing. Just a note the service overall for lunch and dinner is pretty slow, but as long as you plan for that it's not too bad. Also, the main dining area where they serve breakfast is up a long hill, we didn't mind it but if you're traveling with anyone elderly, you'd have to call for the hotel shuttle to transport them.
We did the half day Buck Island Snorkeling tour and it was a really nice trip, I would recommend that.
Overall it's a nice peaceful place, I would not go there if I was traveling alone with my husband or with a group of friends seeking a lot of night life, it's not that kind of place. It is a great place for families especially if you have small children from what I noticed but my Teenagers enjoyed as well.
