“nice condo for families”

The Anchorage Beach Resort

I just returned from a week stay at the Anchorage booked through Mclaughlin Anderson villas. Overall I was satisfied with our accommodations and we enjoyed our trip to st thomas. first of all i want to stress that this is a condo rental and not a hotel or resort. we actually quite liked it because of that, but i can see that if you are looking for a resort experience and a lot of amenities on site this would not be a good place. the one time we went to ask questions at the office it was closed. I would recommend renting a car if you are staying here. otherwise you will spend quite a bit of money on taxis and they could be inconvenient.
the units are individually owned so some could be much nicer than others. Ours was clean and well equipped, decorated in a typical caribbean style. We had a group of 4 adults and 3 children. the unit had 2 bedrooms downstairs and a large loft area upstairs, 2 and 1/2 baths, full kitchen, large patio with barbecue grill, and a washer and dryer. The unit was large enough to accommodate our group and i would recommend it for families traveling with children who will be cooking meals.
the grounds and beach were pretty, but nothing spectacular. We didnt spend too much time at the beach here, It was rocky and there are lots of other beaches on st thomas and st john that we explored, but it was nice for the kids when we did not feel like driving anywhere. there is also a small pool and tennis court.
Overall we were satisfied with our visit and i would recommend this property but i want to stress that this is a condo rental and not a resort. There are many people that live in these units all year and are not on vacation. People will be disappointed if they are expecting a resort and this is a place for people who do not mind figuring things out on their own as there is really no concierge or office onsite.

Just returned from a five day vacation on St. Thomas. Stayed at the anchorage condos, and was very pleased. The rooms were very nice and the people were very courteous. I would recommend the resort to anyone going to the USVI. Only mistake we made was not renting a car until the last day, taxis are very expensive and charge per person no meters like in the states.

“Very nice place to stay”

Stayed there 4 nights with my wife and stepson. A/C was great, beds were comfortable, view from room was excellent - Cowpet Bay is very serene.

Full kitchen saved us a lot on food. Restaurant on site is very good, but pricey as expected. Say hi to the waitress Brandi - she's a fine girl... :-D.

Location is excellent - 5 minutes from Red Hook. You HAVE to take a day trip to St. John's. This was my 3rd trip to St. Thomas, but 1st to Trunk Bay - it truly is awesome, and a snorklers paradise.

Best food and ambiance we had:

- Iggie's at Bolongo Bay - Coconut shrimp was TOO good.
- Agave Terrace at Point Pleasant Resort - pricey and worth it. Awesome views.
- Roberts at the Elysian (pink resort you see from the Anchorage) - Coconut crusted Mahi-Mahi...to die for.

Minor complaints - noisy fan in our BR meant we left it off. Fan in bath sounded like a DC-10 landing on top of us. Living area furniture was futons - not very comfortable. Always seemed to be 1 or 2 mosquitos in the room, no matter how many commando raids we mounted against them... ;-).

This place was quiet and clean. It's NOT a resort with a lobby. It's more like Condo, and many people own their units. Would definately stay here again.

“good, but not perfect”

we spent three nights in a 3 BR, 2 level condo in january.

the good: i think january is the lull before the highest season of february so things were very quiet. the grounds have a calm beach and you can walk over to the elyssian resort's beach on the other end of cowpet bay. the off shore snorkeling was adequate, especially with our young kids learning to snorkel. there are two tennis courts. the condo was spacious, and a (small) washer/dryer. the balcony is spacious and a beautiful view over cowpet bay. the kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, glasses. red hook is close by with a grocery store and restaurants.

the bad: the loft and spiral staircase have very spacious slats/rails and we were concerned that young kids could fall through. the sheets/beddding was worn, pilled, and uncomfortable. i can sleep anywhere but my wife was annoyed. it is definiely not heavenly bedding. the remote location makes it hard to get anywhere without a car or taxi for meals or groceries. the windy weather we experienced is out of anyone's control.

“2 fantastic weeks”

We booked through expedia, it said there were King beds, but the biggest was a queen, the condo does need up dating, but if you are looking for a base and have a family this if okay. There is no entertainment at this resort, but the beach was safe for the kids and they loved the pool, cats and lizards. Mozzies are rife here so stock up on spray.

Everytime there was a storm or it get windy the tv stopped working, so if you have kids bring some dvd's for them to watch.

Aurther's was really nice, the owners were lovely, the food was outstanding!!

Found the cost of food expensive, so it's worth bringiong bits from home. Don't go food shopping at market in Red Hook, really over priced. Go the the Super Market at tutu, this is where the locals shop and the prices are so much better, red hook market charge $7.99 for a gallon of milk, plaza at tutu was $4.99 a gall. There is a Kmart next to this store at tutu mall and this is a good place to buy sun lotions, hats, beach toys for kids and postcard ect.

Duffy's love shack, Red Hook a great place to eat with kids we had 3 kids with us 10, 11 & 16. Also the Caribean night (Wed) at Bongo bay, the kids loved this, you pay a set fee and this includes food and entertainment. Corky beach fantastic, Megan's bay post card perfect, life guards are on this beach, great beach for kids. We went to sugar bay resort, free use of sun chairs, small fee to hire boats and take part in other water sports, jet sking ect. Kids loved it here, lots of hand feeding the fish.

Really inportant note is to rent a car, this is a must, thetaxi's are well over priced and a car is a must to explore the island. Book the car on line before leaving.

Charlotte Am. duty free shopping, Glady's restaurant was wonderful, Caribean food, really friendly ex. service. Shopping , well not that great unless you want to buy diamonds.

Always check the This Week paper ( you can pick one up from the Air port) Check the dates of the Cruise ship arrivals and avoid Megan's bay, shopping and any other big tourist outing when the ships are in.

Remember to always say Good morning or good evening to the locals, they don't like hi or hello. You drive on the left. Try all the beaches, this is a beach holiday. Do try St.John by ferry, but leave the car, you could wait for hours to ferry across with the car and they won't guarentee your cars safty.
We had a two week holiday to remember, the people were friendly, the food fantastic, try the yellow snapper cooked in Banana leaves Red Hook.

Most beaches sell food, it was to hot for a picnic, they have pizza, wraps, burgers, hot dogs, sandwhiches ect, and a big frozen drink helps wash it down.

Have fun and go with the flow!!
