We were in the Taino Beach Ocean Towers, which we were told were recently renovated and in the nicer section. My husband and I just want a clean room and friendly staff and I have to tell you to save your money with this place because it is the biggest dump I have ever stayed at!! If you expect lights, a/c, clean rooms, nice staff, and a decent location, this is not the place for you! When there is a storm the island shuts down the power for a little bit in order to prevent a transmitter blow out and we understood that concept. What we did not understand is that the casino we were standing in at the time of the outage and the surrounding hotels had power and our hotels power had been out for 6 hours! They claimed to not have a generator, although the lobby had power?! When I challenged them on this matter, they simply said "we don't have generators for the entire hotel and don't expect the power to come on for the rest of the night!" I expect a hotel to have a generator and I know it is a state regulation for safety purposes alone! Then we had to beg to get 1 candle and they didn't even have matches! Since there was no power and a/c expect for in the lobby, tons of angry people were crammed in there with nothing to do! The worst part was this happened 3 out of the 5 nights we stayed! We had to use a lighter at one point to get to our room located up narrow, steep steps in a pitch black hallway on the 4th floor! Also, the units were dirty and moldy, our toilets barely worked and we had to fight to get a clean beach towel! The pool was filthy and the food is equivalent to cafeteria food! The hotel is way out by itself and you have to take a ferry boat to get to Port Lucaya, where everything is! One day the guy never showed up and I almost missed my $170 dolphin encounter! After 20 minutes of waiting some kid told us, only b/c we asked, that the ferry was not coming this hour! Also, don't sign up for any water activities behind the hotel b/c they just broker them out to the beach behind the Westin and Sheraton. We signed up for a banana boat ride only to have to wait 30 minutes for a launch boat to pick us up in the ocean and drop us off at the other beach, then to wait another 30 minutes to find out we couldn't even ride because they were so backed up it would be another 30 minutes to get on! Come on, 1 hour 1/2 to ride a banana boat, when the guy behind our hotel said 5 minutes! We gave up and left! If you want to do activities besides wave runners you are better off going to the beach behind the Westin and Sheraton. I can't think of any reason why anyone would want to stay here when there are many other nice, affordable hotels nearby and in much better locations. If you want total disappointment in every aspect, stay at Taino Beach b/c that is the only thing they can surely deliver!
