“My favorite little hotel...”

Clarion Hotel & Suites Selby

4 of 5 stars
Toledo, Ohio
Aug 11, 2008

I stayed here for the Toronto International Film Festival on a "Me, Myself, and I" trip...what a find! As the description says, it is a renovated mansion, so it is older and has quirks. The elevator is very old with an accordion door...only a major problem when trying to wrestle luggage in and out. Large rooms with gigantic closets and bathrooms and comfy beds awaited a weary traveler. The front desk staff is helpful without being intrusive. Parking is a little tight, but rather affordable for a big city...just leave your vehicle parked and use public transportation! The continental breakfast was average...the only thing I remember was quivering hard-boiled eggs in a bowl...not appetizing at 8:00AM. I do wish they had a little refrigerator and microwave in the room...but beggars can't be choosy! You can find a better breakfast at a number of places close by. The Sherbourne subway station is literally STEPS away. The hotel is in a residential neightborhood which I personally like...a little removed from the craziness ot more touristy areas. There are a lot of regular visitors that stay here year after year, and I do believe I will be one of them!

“They made an unauthorized charge on my credit card”

Clarion Hotel & Suites Selby

Jul 31, 2008

These people are crooks; if you stay here, prepared to be screwed over. My husband and I live in Toronto, but wanted to have a nice night away, so we booked a night at the Clarion. We liked the hotel - it was a fine stay. The staff wasn't overly friendly, and the 'continental' breakfast in the basement wasn't the best meal, but it was fine for a budget place.

Then, they made an unauthorized charge on my credit card. BEFORE I WAS EVEN CHECKED OUT, they charged me $30.00, without my consent. I charged the cost of the room to my credit card, and when I checked my statement, I phoned the hotel to find out why I had this extra charge. They then accused me of stealing a blanket (in late May? We don't want their icky hotel blanket with god-knows-what-bodily-fluids on it! We brought a backpack for 2 people, as we only needed to bring our toiletries and a change of clothes. Where would we pack this big blanket, to smuggle it out? Why would we steal a blanket when we live in the same city?). We did not steal the blanket, so I was more than a little upset to be not only accused of theft, but charged $30!! I have phoned the hotel repeatedly, with no one to help me. One manager told me that she believes I didn't steal the blanket, and can't explain the charge.

I believe they are trying to extort money from guests this way. Check your credit card statements, or better yet, don't leave them your credit card information.

“Excellent Value for Money”

Clarion Hotel & Suites Selby

5 of 5 stars
New York City, New York
Jun 20, 2008

I had stayed at the Selby for a night before my important meeting. I booked it online and it was one of the good discounts in downtown toronto. The neighborhood is largely residential, and if you are looking for views, all you may get is view of other apartments (or nothing if in the basement) but if you do not care, this is a good value for money. My purpose was to relax and prepare for my meeting. I feel, I could find no better place. It is next door to the subway and you can reach within 10 minutes from the Union station after making a change at Bloor-Yonge station. The staff provides excellent services (I was offer an upgrade as I did not like the room I was offered!) The rooms are maintained perfectly spotless. Breakfast was more than adequate, fresh and of a very good quality. Check in and check out is easy and does not take more than a minute each way if you booked online. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Toronto without a car and wishing to stay in the downtown area with easy access to public transport and peaceful neighborhood.

“Quaint and friendly!”

Clarion Hotel & Suites Selby

We selected this hotel because of the convenience to the subway system, close to the gay district, and the quaintness of it. After traversing the steps up to the lobby (We were on our honeymoon and had lots of luggage). We were pleasantly greeted and permitted to check into our rooms earlier, the front desk gave an excellent recommendation for a lunch spot. The room was on the top floor, and we took the "eclectic" little elevator (mind you this use to be a residence that was turned into a hotel). There were small notions about the hotel that gave to it's age - not in a bad way, like crooked door hangs, but the doors were set to fit. The maid service was wonderful, rooms always left very clean. We enjoyed the historical aspects of the hotel. The breakfast was minimal, but a nice snack. I liked that they had cranberry juice. We decided to extend our stay an additional day. The staff is extremely friendly, and willing to give local recommendations. I highly recommend using the transit system, excellent and runs often (like every few minutes), but do expect to be like ants going in and out of trains or buses (we live in Atlanta so were use to riding the subway). The city was very clean and everyone very friendly. Don't be afraid to ask for directions or suggestions. Side note for those that enjoy military history, visit St Michaels and go to the museum in the basement - the folks there served in the military and are very proud to share all the history and pictures.

“Worst Experience Ever”

Clarion Hotel & Suites Selby

I stayed here for my birthday as well as my one year anniversary with my boyfriend and I was so upset when I got there. The parking lot is so tiny that it feels like only Tonka Toys would fit properly. If you have a big truck or van good luck trying to fit in their parking lot. The breakfast that is included in the stay consists of orange juice and dry cereals. Not impressed! Also when we finally got to our room it was in the basement. I went to look outside and there was nothing but a brick wall outside of the window. Very dissapointed again. The room was clean and suitable but not what i was expecting. They also claim to have elevators but they aren't elevators at all they are lifts the size of small closets. I didn't trust it at all so we took the stairs. I am a size three waist and I could barely fit inside the elevator let alone bring my boyfriend and our luggage. Like i said we felt safer taking the stairs. I dont reccomend this to anyone unless you are prepared for the above or looking for a place to crash after a party.
