I practice in Hereford as a lawyer, but live in Wales. I commute daily, but as my office was having a Christmas party, I decided to stay overnight and got a great deal on-line with the Travelodge Saver rate of just £19 for the room. To get this rate, you have to book at least 21 days in advance. You pay in full on booking and there is no opportunity to get a refund if you cancel. The hotel is of a traditional urban Travelodge style, being a 3-storey building, built within the last year. As far as location is concerned, it is right opposite the Cider Museum (Hereford is the home of Bulmer Cider) and next to Sainsbury's car-park. It's on the road that leads towards Brecon and is about a 5 minute stroll from the city centre shops and a 10 minute stroll from the Cathedral. On entering, you are in a small lobby with two vending machines, one selling snacks (crisps, chocolate, refrigerated tuna/pasta snack-pots etc and the other selling soft drinks). There is a lift. The rooms are the usual Travelodge style. Double bed, chair, hanging space, tea and coffee, en-suite shower room, small TV. There are about 2 or 3 towels provided. Style of the rooms is basic with light-wood furniture, white walls and bedding. The hotel is spotlessly clean. Note however that there is no hairdryer and the only toiletry provided is a small bar of soap. Bring your own iron, hairdryer, shampoo and shower gel. The big problem when I tried to check-in at 1-30pm was that there were no visible staff. I waited and waited in the lobby. The phone behind the counter rang and rang with no answer. Two workmen (who had been doing some maintenance at the property) waited with me to hand back a key for the area that they had been decorating but no-one appeared. After 20 minutes (I had repeatedly rung the courtesy bell with no response), I stepped outside and saw a plaque beneath a CCTV camera with a phone number on it. I rang the number - which was the Travelodge Central Security Centre and they put me in touch with the area Manager. I left a call on his voicemail, but now, after 4 days, it still hasn't been retured! I went back into the lobby and at 2-05pm (afer waiting for 35 minutes) a member of staff appeared behind the desk. I said that I have been waiting to check-in for over a half-hour and that some workmen were also anxious to hand to him a key. He seemed disinterested and indicated to me that the check-in time was 3pm, so that even if he had been around when I arrived at 1-30pm, I wouldn't be able to have access to my room. I complained that this was not proper service, whereupon he offered me access to a room, if I paid £10 as an 'early-check-in fee'. At this point I mentioned that I was awaiting to hear from his district manager, whereupon he made a room available, at no extra cost !! This may be a one-off, but it is clear that there is a serious training issue arising.
