“Three (small) stars”

Clarendon Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Bowral, Australia
Aug 24, 2008

The Clarendon Hotel in Edinburgh is a bit of a mixed bag. The hotel is rated as 3 star but I would suggest that they would only be small stars! The hotel is old, the decore is tired and in need of some renovation.
On the other hand, the rooms are quite adequate in size, clean and confortable.
The hotel is centrally located in Shadwick Place with the airport shuttle bus stopping outside the hotel. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the main area of Princes Street and then on up to the Castle.
Breakfast was good but trying to explain an order to dining room staff whose English was less than adequate sometimes caused a few problems.
I would probably stay there again but no more than a few days.

“Dissapointed”

Clarendon Hotel

Aug 13, 2008

We booked this Hotel through Alpha Rooms firstly because of the reviews on their web page and secondly the pictures, which bear no resemblense of what we found at all.
The first room we were given was no bigger than a shoe box. Very shabby in decoration and with very dirty net curtains. The window led out on to the fire escape with steps right up to the window. The 2nd room we were given was bigger in size but again was in a very shabby state of decoration as was the whole hotel. It needed a complete facelift. This was not at all what we expected for the price we paid (£117.00 per night) and we felt very let down by Alpha Rooms. There were no computer facilities for use. It was in the West End part of Edinburgh, not just off Princess Street as described, it was at the very end of Princess Street and then some, not particularly a very nice area either.
Next time back to the Travel Lodge!!!!

“Terrible customer service”

Clarendon Hotel

2 of 5 stars
Glasgow
Aug 12, 2008

The hotel was in a great location, right in Edinburgh City centre, and I was pleased to be able to book in this location during the edinburgh festival.

The room (110) was very clean and facilities were of a good standard for the price.

On arrival I went for a shower and the fire alarm was set off in the middle of my shower. I got changed and out of the hotel as quickly as possible as would be expected.

On returning to the hotel later that evening, I was asked by the night porter if I was staying in room 110, to which I replied yes. The porter then advised me that I "must close the door when having a shower as it was MY FAULT the alarm had been set off due to the steam setting off the alarm". However there were no signs in the room advising me this was the case. In addition, when I returned to the room, i had a message, which was an email written by reception to themselves and printed off which had only the following words on the sheet "Message is " Can you close the door the bathroom door when having a shower".

No other explanation was given and after my very brief discussion with the night porter where I really felt that I was being blamed for setting the alarm off, this angered me.

If they had just said something like, "we have identified a problem with your room and would appreciate you closing the door when showering, as the fire alarm seems to be sensitive to the steam created by the shower" I would have felt fine about it, but the staff just made me feel like it was all my fault.

Not impressed, and I will not return to this hotel as they clearly have no idea how to speak to paying customers in a respectfull way.

“good location”

was meant to be going to dublin but my boyfriend decided to look for his passport 5 minutes before we had to leave for the airport...couldnt find it so we couldnt go!
he quickly booked up this hotel to make up for the weekend that he nearly ruined!

so he didnt really have time to search for a perfect hotel but if we had we'd have probably picked this one anyway. great location, good prices.

room, staff and breakfast were great.

only negitive thing i can say is that the 'free wi-fi' was terrible, didnt work at all and when it did it was for about 2 seconds! we had quickly packed a laptop so we could plan our time in edinburgh as we kind of didnt have a clue where we were going or what there was to do. so the internet would have been really useful but we just relied on the many leaflets in the hotel and had a great time!!

“Good Location”

Clarendon Hotel

May 12, 2008

Good Location, shame about the tramworks outside the front but manageable. Staff very friendly and helpful.Breakfast fine and freshly cooked
Room rather small and very hot. Had to open window and double glazing which made it very noisy. Lots of calling and shouting until early hours, them the bin men with their "beep- beep" came along. If we could have kept window shut it would have been OK
