Okay, first off let me say that before I booked this hotel I read the reviews and was somewhat convinced that maybe this hotel was a diamond in the rough. I was ecstatic about having possibly found a cheaply priced hotel that was nice and above average at the same time. I was a little shocked by the hotel at first considering what I had in mind. In my opinion this hotel is not a 3 star but more like a 2 star.
The lobby is exactly as shown by one of the pictures on this site. As soon as you walk through the door there is staircase leading to the main floor. There is no reception on the first floor. The reception area gives you a very good indication of what your room will be like. Very modest and plain. No frills anywhere but I suppose this is expected. The elevator is the size of a very small closet and I am not exagerating in the least when I say that if two people are in there they will be chest to chest with not even an inch of space between them. It certainly serves its purpose but again no frills.
Our room was room 22 and we had a double superior room with a king and twin bed. We reserved this room b/c I wanted a larger space and possibly room for luggage considering that real estate in Paris is coveted. I've been to Paris before and am aware of the differences in room size. The room we had was just about the spitting image of the pictures posted on their site with the blue bedspread but we had red ones instead. The room was really clean but all in all I'd have to say it was a dump. We didn't pay much (72 Euros for a single room, for a friend, and 99 Euros for our double) so I really shouldn't have been shocked but again I was going off the reviews. The bathroom was terrible. Cracked tile floors, the bathtub was tiled and it was also cracked and gritty with dirt. Clean towels and no washcloths (didn't find washclothes in our Germany 4 star hotel either-- it's just a cultural difference). Great view out of the window. Small fan on the desk. Stocked mini fridge but no price list anywhere. A French friend of mine was staying with us and she warned us about taking the items in the fridge commenting on one bottle of water being 10 Euros. I am sure she was exagerating a bit but with no prices listed we decided not to sample from it. Her room was a single and it was a lot nicer than ours. Her bed linens and comforter were more updated and pretty. She had marble floors in her bathroom with a marble shower. It looked as though it had been renovated. She was in room 54. Both rooms had a 20 or 24 inch flat screen tv. Nice touch but it looked so out of place in the rooms since it looked expensive but everything else was shabby. Also, the previous reviewer is correct about the porn station. It's just like any other channel and can come as quite a shock. I didn't find such station in Germany (we were in Germany 5 nights prior to this trip) so I am not sure if it's a French thing or not or just a Hotel de Prony thing. Who knows?
Location could have been better. I think that if we got the same room closer to the Arc or the Eiffel Tower we would've been more content. We didn't find that the arc was close at all. We ended up taking the metro to the Arc de la triomphe. It's about 2 transfers away but the metro is easy to manuever around once you get the hang of it.
Since we paid for our French friends room we were on more of a budget than we would have otherwise been so I guess we got what we paid for. It is not a three star but more like a 2 star by American standards. It is very clean and simple and shabby. Next time, we will of course spend more money for a nicer, more centrally located hotel or spend the same money for a more centrally located hotel. Location matters a lot in Paris although there is the Metro. You don't really want to spend all your time in transit if you can help it.
