“Loved IT!!!”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Aug 30, 2008

I stayed in this hotel in July with my family as we where heading to my wedding in Norway. Let me tell you that after a 22 hour flight and 7 hours in layovers, the hotel service and staff is by far above and beyond.

Okay Let me start, I arrived at 7:30 in the morning and my room was available immediatly. The room I stayed in was freshly painted and remodeled. The A/C- Well I live in hawaii so fresh air was great.

The front desk, bell staff, and the waiter staff, literaly go above and beyond service to see you smile. Saide - the bellman is the man to go to for any questions you might have about dining, drinks, etc. etc. its amsterdam.

I would like to give a personal thanks to David (the night time orderly) for making my stay the most memorable, with the 3:00am room service. I think I say this for everyone in my party that we wish we could have sit down and had a few drinks with you, and not in a gay way.

The only thing I wanted to address was that the concierge Shawn I think is his name a very tall, slender blonde hair individual in his late 20 or early 30's. He was very rude and a cold individual I noticed through out my stay. The thing about this hotel is that its like a maze, but lined with artwork and as my feet already had blisters from sightseeing everything amsterdam had to offer. The weather started to take a turn for the worst with a cold down pour at 67 F . I asked this gentelman for an umbrella as he had 4 of them behind the desk and told me he didnt have any, and insisted I go to my room to get an umbrella in the closet. Well there is only one and if you have 2 people staying in your room, well i dont think i need to do the math. I pointed this out to him then he insisted he didnt have any left. (But there was 4 of them behind you)

Other than that, I still give this hotel a 5 and still want to point out that the staff is very friendly, and helpful, and I will be returning to this hotel in November.

“More Like a Run-Down Westin”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Aug 22, 2008

I definitely agree with other reviewers who wrote that the Pulitzer is not up to Luxury Collection standards.

We booked our hotel through the Starwood Preferred Guest program and even received one night free with our points. Between the points and a corporate rate, we were only supposed to pay about 800 Euros for a 5 night stay, which seemed very reasonable.

When we arrived, we received the same treatment at the front desk as many previous reviewers... They had trouble deciphering the reservations booked by our Starwood agent, they made us wait 5 hours for a room (we arrived at 9:00 a.m., which I imagine is typical for most American travelers since overnight flights are our only option), and they were generally disorganized and not very cordial (though not rude). The front desk clerk finally got it together and told me we had received a complimentary upgrade on some nights to include breakfast (since two of our three reservations included it and one did not).

Our room was a spacious (by European standards) canal-front room. It was clean and bright. The bathroom was small (shower/bathtub combo and a single sink), but pretty and did have GREAT water pressure. The air conditioner worked very well, which was on the sometimes-warm August days. The TV was older - no flat panels here. The furniture was nice but shabby - scratched and dented. Being on the canal had its perks, but we could hear people walking by (talking, shouting and laughing) until the wee hours. Ear plugs helped with this problem.

There were fairly major renovations on our floor which we were not notified about before arriving or at check in. They were painting the walls outside of our room and replacing all of the carpet while we were there. We heard banging during the day. Most luxury hotels will avoid booking rooms around this sort of renovation - or at the very least warn the guests - but not the Pulitzer.

The services and food offered by the hotel are very expensive. Internet was over $20/day, many of the tours offered by the concierge desk topped 200 Euros, and while the breakfast was great, I wouldn't spend the extra 75 Euros a night to include it in the price of my room (seemingly the only differentiator between a regular room and "executive"). We did spend 38 Euros pp to take a 1.5 hour ride on their lovely canal boat, which would have been great if not for a family with a baby who showed up late with a stroller and displaced other passengers.

At check-out, we found out that they had not reconciled our Starwood reservations after all and had been charging us for the "free upgrade" we received at check-in. We were bring charged an extra 400 Euros for our stay. We were able to negotiate down to just 125 Euros and finally gave up. It was time to go home and leave the Pulitzer behind us!!

“Great breakfast!”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

After 25 visits plus to Amsterdam we were pleased to get a great deal for the Pulitzer which has always been out of the price range I want to pay for a short city break.
The room was small for a 5 star hotel but bigger than most I have stayed at in Amsterdam. Bathroom was good size and the bed was massive! Very helpful staff and I have to say the choice at breakfast was superb, a full cooked or continental buffet is available together with breads, pastries, fresh fruit juices, meats and salmon!
Only downside is that the courtyard is used as a smoking area by guests because of the new smoking ban so if you are unfortunate you may find people disturbing your sleep in the morning at 6.00 am, they were drinking champagne however which may have contributed to the noise!
Overall I would go again at the same price of £125 a night, the hotel tarrif listed in the room was 525 euros per night for 2 with breakfast. ouch!!

“Amsterdam Pulizter Hotel - Great hotel”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

5 of 5 stars

You really feel you are in Amsterdam staying here, standard rooms are not huge but the character of the place makes up for this. Friendly and efficient staff, excellent location 5/10 mins to Dam Square area and 15 min walk in the other direction to the museums and shopping areas. The area around the hotel is definately upmarket, away from the noise and tourists of the more lively areas. I walked everywhere, didn't need to take public transport once. The only negatives I could find - the gym is tiny only 4 or 5 machines and the food is OK not brilliant but overall I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone. Good value for money for the price paid.

We stayed five nites at the Pulitzer this july--couldn't be better !
Fabulous location, wonderful room with top level amenities in every respect, and one of the most pleasantly staffed property we've ever enjoyed. Front desk/concierge/floor staff could not do enough, and always with a smile. Big bucks, and worth every penny.
