My wife and I stayed at the Bilderberg Hotel Jan Luyken a few weeks ago. It was clean, the staff was polite, and it was within a very short walk (about 2 minutes) of both the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum (both of which were wonderful, by the way, and not to be missed). There were few restaurants nearby, however, which means you'll have to walk a bit more to get a taste of Amsterdam come dinner time.
The main thing to be careful about regarding this hotel is that you should not let them stick you in Room 007. It is small, even by European standards, and right on the ground floor. The window overlooks the small outdoor seating area of the bar, as well. After traveling from the United States, we were jet-lagged and just wanted some sleep by the time 10pm local time came around. As you can imagine, the noise of conversation and laughter from the bar was somewhat aggravating. We would never have booked this room if we knew this room was not only on the ground floor but adjacent to the bar. This is not an issue of this being a cheaper room, either; it cost as much as other rooms in quieter parts of the building. Specify "no 007" when booking.
I also felt that the hotel was a little too-expensive, as well, especially given the tiny room and the noise. I suppose the high cost of lodging is simply a function of Amsterdam, though. It is not a particularly inexpensive city.
