The Ventana Hotel was perfect in every way! The location, the staff, the rooms, the breakfast...we can't think of even the slightest complaint.
Thank you to all the Tripadvisor people that gave such good advice about the Ventana.
Rooms/Staff:
We had a great view of Tyn's Cathedral, the room was open and airy, very clean and updated, and the furnishings were just right. The bathroom was large, and again, extremely clean and updated. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and had good recommendations for sights, food, etc. All spoke fluent English. They made sure that our request for a room with a view was granted - we called a week in advance.
Location:
Exactly as everyone has described - perfect for touring Prague. The square and Tyn's church are literally right out the front door...but the hotel is tucked down a quiet street, so there is no noise or hustle and bustle from the crowds.
Note: There is a great little deli right out front of the lobby where you can get water, liquor, beer, snacks, etc.
Food/Breakfast:
By far the best buffet breakfast we ever experienced in a hotel. Fresh eggs, meats, croissants, juices, sausages, cereals, yogurt, delicious coffee, all sorts of breads - and Champagne! Everything you could want to start your day, and in a charming setting.
Getting There:
We took the Cedaz shuttle for $35 one way, and $30 for the return (Cash only) - book the roundtrip when you pay for the first leg. They are in an easy to find kiosk in the airport baggage claim area. We were expecting to have to go through customs when we arrived, but since we connected through Germany from Los Angeles, they did a passport inspection in Frankfurt, so getting to the hotel was a breeze.
Another good tip: Use the ATM at the airport. There is a minimal fee, and they give you the most up to date exchange rate, and will give you Czech Crowns - don't use the exchange machines or go to exchange stores - you will get ripped off. I wouldn't even bring any American cash - just call your bank before you leave and ask what their rates are, etc....that worked great for us and there are many ATM's throughout Prague.
Locals:
Everyone we met was really nice, and most spoke perfect English. I get the feeling that they are getting used to tourists taking over their town, which is kind of a shame...the Euro is so strong that many young Europeans vacation here and get a big bang for their buck...not so much for Americans - the locals definitely have learned to adjust their prices accordingly. Use good sense when selecting a restaurant or bar, most are tourist traps, you'll have to dig around the side streets to find the right prices. Try to pick up a few Czech phrases - seemed like the locals appreciate any effort to speak their language.
Food/Beer/Sights:
The food in Prague is different - goulashes, cabbages and gamey meats. We enjoyed a lot of the local fare - try Kokolvna to get your feet wet - it's a Pilsner Urquell restaurant about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. They serve Czech fare that is pretty main stream (We had Goulash that was really good)..and of course great beer. You can dine on the sidewalk as well. You definitely should not miss the terrace at the top of the U Prince hotel which is just off the square near the Ventana. They have a nice menu, and serve my new favorite beer of all time - Staropramen!!!! But go mainly for the view - it is right across from the Astronomical clock, and is a great place to be at night.
To Do:
Definitely climb the towers in the astronomical clock and at the Charles Bridge - excellent views - there is a small fee for each, but well worth it. There are a lot of old churches that are worth checking out. We weren't as impressed with the Palace. There are nice views and the St. Vitus cathedral is amazing! Nothing else much to mention.
We had a great time in Prague, and couldn't think of a better place to stay than the Ventana! We definitely hope to be back some day.
Thank you Ventana, you made our stay perfect!
