The Melrose is an older hotel and for some travelers, they may find several small things they would complain about when staying here. However, we are very positive people and those small things don't really affect, or ruin, our trip.
I booked this hotel through hotels.com and did book a king suite with a sofa bed. Fortunately, I brought along a copy of the confirmation because when we arrived, the hotel showed us only being in a room with 2 beds. We are a couple traveling with 2 teenagers. When I showed the confirmation of a king suite, they then changed us to a suite. When we went up to our room, 515, we found out there was no door on the bedroom. The front desk didn't seem to know why but I assume they may have been working on it to put on a new door. We were then moved to 415. This suite is a decent size but not real large for 4 so of course a room with 2 beds would have been too small for us. Not really a problem.
The location is great and we love the Georgetown area. We only ate in the hotel one morning for breakfast, and it was pretty good. There are so many good places to eat close by that you pretty much have your choice of whatever type of food and place you like.
Foggy Bottom Metro station is about 3 blocks away and you can connect on the subway to pretty much anyplace you would like to travel around the city. Buses are also running very frequently from right across the street from the hotel going the one direction and down at the corner to go the other. Unless you plan to travel out of the city, I wouldn't waste your money renting a car. It is expensive to park, if you can even find a parking spot. Public transportation is outstanding and you can also catch a Washington Flyer cab taking you direct to the hotel. If you call Washington Flyer sometime before you are ready to leave, you can arrange to have their cab come to the hotel to take you back to the airport whatever time you like.
You are within a few blocks of CVS, Walgreens and Trader Joe's so you can always find those things you need.
Walking anywhere around the area, we always felt safe even walking to the White House. It is an easy walk to the Georgetown shops and restaurants.
As I mentioned earlier, this is an older hotel so be prepared for small things such as some peeling wallpaper, possible need for paint, some carpet stains and not as clean as maybe it could be but these are all what you might see in an older hotel.
I wish I could remember the names of some of the staff because there are some that I would have especially liked to compliment. To start with, the housekeeping staff for our room always did a very good job. When we needed assistance at the front desk, they were also helpful. The people working the front door were excellant and I wish to thank everyone for helping make this a very enjoyable vacation.
The Melrose was priced right for us and gave us what we were hoping for on our first visit to DC.

“Great Hotel!”

Melrose Hotel, Washington DC

The Melrsoe Hotel was wonderful! The Valet Staff was very helpful and very attentive. Cars are parked underground in a private and locked garage, which was great. Our room was a bit tiny for our family of 4, but that was our fault, we should have gotten a bigger room. The housekeeping was great, we called for towels and got them in less that 5 mins. It is in a great location, you can walk to all the great places in Georgetown. I would stay here again!

“Reasonable Quality at fair price”

Melrose Hotel, Washington DC

4 of 5 stars
San Diego, CA
Jul 16, 2008

Reasonable quality hotel close to Georgetown and Foggy Bottom Metro. The room was clean and spacious with wet bar and fridge.
The stay was pleasant and enjoyable. It had a four star rating but I would say more 3 star being a little worn at the edges. I have to go up four floors for ice. Don't eat in the restaurant but the Library Lounge was good for a drink and sandwich. Easy to use the Metro (get a weeks pass if you're there that lone) and the special bus running between Georgetown and Union Station. Even with various buses and other transportation be prepared for standing and walking around a lot. There is a CVS drugstore on the backside of the building across the street. It's better than the little market/cafe next door. I would recommend the hotel as a good moderately priced hotel for those that aren't real picky about some details.

“Better than expected!”

Melrose Hotel, Washington DC

Jul 16, 2008

I'll preface my review with saying I booked it through Hotwire and got a great price for a weekend stay...especially for the 4th of July!

My wife and I arrived on July 3rd. There is limited space in front to drop off, but everyone was very attentive and helpful. I was able to find a metered spot in front to park so avoided the outrageous $34 per day valet fee. Since it was the 4th, the meters were not going to be enforced so it worked out great since we checked out on the 5th.

We were provided a room that absolutely exceeded our expectations. It was large, spacious and clean. The housekeeping staff is very attentive at this hotel.

I was concerned that booking through Hotwire would result in a lesser room, but it was anything but. We didn't eat at the hotel but it is very convenient to Georgetown, very close to the Foggy Bottom Metro stop and you can even walk to the Lincoln Memorial (we did for the fireworks.)

“Recommend to anyone”

Melrose Hotel, Washington DC

My family and i stayed at the Melrose for 3 nights, our stay was excellent not a problem. Our room was very clean we had the Superior which comes with a microwave, fridge and coffee maker seperate from the rest of the room which is great since we traveled with kids. Very close to the metro and all other forms of public transportation. No need to rent a car parking is expensive. The Melrose is within less than a 5 minute walk to Georgetown, lots of shops and restaurants. The staff at the Melrose were very friendly and very helpful. This hotel is just as good as any other 5 star hotel.Service for me and my family are always top and the Melrose does just that.

Our second day we did the open top sightseeing bus, you buy a 2 day pass and that allows you to get on and off at any of there stops. The bottom of the bus is air comditioned so this is perfect for those traveling with small children. If you can't get back to the bus before they stop running no worries hop on the metro back to the hotel we did.You can either buy your tickets online or pay for them on the bus they take credit cards.
OPENTOPSIGHTSEEING.COM
This is a must do.The stop is in front of the Four Seasons Hotel about a 5-7 minute walk from the MELROSE if that much.

We also did the trolley tour at night they start at 7pm which it is still very bright outside. The tour itself is good but our experience with the company was NOT. ROYAL TOURS by this i mean that the weather was so hot that taking the trolley was not an option so they used a bus instead which would of been fine had the bus not been outdated and the AC not working well. At everystop you have a certain time to be back on the bus to me we just felt rushed, by the time you exit and walk to the sight to take a picture it's time to go back.So a word to the wise if you can't use the trolley before you book use GRAYLINE INSTEAD.
Refunds are not giving. Other than that everything was great.

Twice we ate at Uno's Chicago Grille on M street and Wisconsin Ave, the food was great but if you are really hungry not the place service is very slow.
We also ate at Furin's on M street for breakfast excellent food, they are across the street from the Four Seasons Hotel.
Also try Marshall's restaurant around the corner from the Melrose the food was very good, but eat downstairs if you have children with you upstairs is a bar.
