“Overall a very nice stay with excellent service”

Grand Hyatt Washington

Jul 27, 2008

After reading the other reviews, I was a little nervous to stay at this hotel. I happen to be somewhat of a "hotel snob", if you will. However, despite staying at the Grand Hyatt during a super busy conference (all of the rooms in the hotel were sold out), I experienced nothing but excellent service. My check-in went very smoothly, I did not have to wait in line to speak to the concierge at anytime, room service was fast and the food was quite good, and any requests that I made through the front desk or housekeeping were handled efficiently and with a smile. On top of that, the Sunday brunch was fabulous! I do agree that the TV was on the small side, and the bathroom could use a fan, but other than that, I had not complaints whatsover. Yes, prices are high for things like soda from the mini-bar, but that is to be expected at any hotel. Despite other reviewers' complaints, I do not think it unusual for the hotel to charge extra for fitness center and wifi-- many hotels do that. We were in close proximity to many museums, shops, churches, restaurants. I would definitely stay here again.

“Hated it!”

Stayed for 4 nights in an interior facing king. Upon arrival the doormen were totally overwhelmed and we had to drag our bags from the kerb to the front desk right ourselves right past the bell desk where again no one offered assistance. Long line to check so I did the kiosk check in which worked out OK. Then dragged the bags to the lift ourselves. Once we got to our floor our room was on the exact parallel corner and this is a big hotel. I sent my other half to the room about half way there as the carpeted hallways are tough to drag small wheeled luggage on and I had to take a break.

One we got to the room it was fine. No safe so had to lock laptop in my suitcase. Did not matter what temp you set the thermostat at the room temp stayed the same. Bed was comfortable. Room on the small side. Wireless did not reliably work 2 of the 4 days I was there. Room would be made up late in the afternoon.

There were lines for everything. Check in, line, Concierge, line. Buffet, line. Lifts, line. Escalators, line. Taxi, line. Starbucks, line, Check out, line. These lines could be very long. Concierge was overwhelmed and I did not know if they had confirmed my return transfer or not until the night before and I gave the request to them 2 days prior. The restaurant was marginal and overpriced. Service was sketchy. The bellmen share the same lifts with the guests and I saw one literally pin a female guest to the elevator wall with the cart. They were quick to retrieve my bags at check out but there was confusion about getting the bags in the car to get to the airport. Preserved/plastic plants on the interior ledges are an odd colour and stand out.

I did go have drinks and dinner at the Park Hyatt and there is a world of difference between the Park and the Grand so if you have a chance stay at the Park. The rooms are amazing as well.

The Grand is simply a glorified people warehouse for conventioneers and should be avoided unless that is what you are here to do or to burn points.

“Loved the Grand Hyatt”

Grand Hyatt Washington

5 of 5 stars
Shepherdstown, WV
Jul 14, 2008

Just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Grand Hyatt in Washington DC. It was baseball weekend for our family and I looked for lodging that would allow easy access to the Metro. At the last minute we found our daughter would be able to join us. I requested two double/queen beds instead of a king but was told that due to a large conference there were none available. I was offered a roll-away, which I accepted. In the meantime, I received an email offering the e-conceirge service. I also utilized that to confirm the roll-away. When we arrived our room was ready with the roll-away already in place.
We enjoyed every aspect of our stay. Every employee of the Hyatt that we encountered was especially friendly and helpful. Our room appeared to be very clean and the bed was very comfortable. We took advantage of room service late one night and it was served promptly and the food was both hot and delicious. The hotel was obviously packed with visitors, yet every service we needed was provided.
I must add that Nationals Park is a beautiful stadium. We have visited many baseball parks in the country and this is truly one of the best. Access via Metro is easy and it is obvious that Metro is working hard to move fans in and out as quickly as possible.
Although it was a little warm and muggy in DC, the weekend was absolutely wonderful.

“Location, location...”

We loved the location of the hotel and when we chose not to walk, the metro was accessed without going outside. In our experience, the staff was very accomodating. This was a good thing as we had two rooms and 12th floor lounge privileges and during our 9 day stay we were continually having our card keys reactivated accurately. Our regular sleeping room was on the small side and the small vanity was inside the bathroom. I ate one lunch in the waterside cafe and it had a very limited menu. There are too many options in the area so I advise skipping meals there. I believe we would consider staying here again.

“Nickle and Dimed”

Grand Hyatt Washington

3 of 5 stars
Watertown, MA

The hotel is located in a great section of town for sightseeing and is conveniently located on top of a Metro stop. The room was clean but lacks a seperate 'getting ready' area outside the bathroom. The room also does not have a DVD player, it seems that this is becoming more and more common but I'm sure they want you to buy their movies instead of bringing your own. They do have an IPod docking station which was a nice touch.

There was also no vent in the bathroom so it got very steamy in there, with no other place to get ready this was a slight issue. I felt that the additional charges for things were a bit much...for example, this is clearly a business hotel with many many ballrooms for conferences and the like yet they do not provide free internet service. It's $10 a day for slow internet and $15 a day for faster service which seemed a bit over the top for me.

The hotel has a convenience store in it with no prices on anything and a bottle of water cost us $4! I just really felt that they were taking advantage of the fact that you're either a tourist or your there on business and can expense it without takign cost into consideration.

There are several restaurants (their website is outdated with several of the restaurants mentioned no longer in the hotel). The higher end restaurant was not worth the price, the food was so and so and my husband's Jameson on the rocks was $11! Also, the lobby has a nice shallow pool with a piano on an island, I was disappointed that it was not in use at any point during my week long stay. There is a breakfast and lunch restaurant that offers a brunch buffet which was outlandishly priced at $19 (or around there). The seperate items listed were the same price as listed in the room service menu so you can imagine the cost. It was convenient that there was a Starbuck's right in the hotel lobby but it closes fairly early in the evenings.

The other additional charge/inconvenience is that the website lists that there is a gym. This gym, however, is located outside of the hotel on the way to the Metro station and costs you $10 per workout (the pool is free) so I chose not to go even though I brought all of my work out clothes.

Interestingly, I initially requested a King sized bed and was told that there were none available which is what another reviewer posted but when I got there they did switch us to a King sized room and the second receptionist was not sure why I was told there were none available.

The pluses were the location, the room was clean (bad view of construction), the Starbucks in the lobby, and free USA Todays, full concierge service also.

The minuses were sticker shock on just about everything, bathroom set up, no internet service provided, no free gym or convenient access.
