“Home base to explore Bangkok”

Phranakorn-Nornlen Hotel

We very much enjoyed the hospitality, interior and warm atmosphere at Pranakorn. Small details make a difference: preparing a take away breakfast when we left very early in the morning, tea on the rooms in the afternoon/evening. A beautiful roof top vegetable garden and nicely decorated walls. Combined with good breakfasts and a location that brings you immediately into center Bangkok we felt that we could explore Bangkok from a real home-base.

The overall experience was good, the hotel is to be advised, specially if you are traveling with young kids. Just be aware that it might be hard to obtain a regular continental breakfast. If you insist heavily you will eventually get coffee, bread and juice, instead of soy milk or soup, but then the cook will be noticeably displeased...

“What a funky little place”

Phranakorn-Nornlen Hotel

We arrived with 3 small boys from Cambodia for a two night stay. It was just great. Very friendly people, an intimate, fun and funky atmosphere, brilliant and robust massages, a wonderful cafe open until 10pm, and easy to get about if you use the river. It should be in the Hip Hotels guide.

We stayed at the Phranakorn Norlen with our 5 young children. It was a lovely place. If you're looking for an out-of-the-way oasis, with a lush garden lobby, helpful staff, and utterly unique and charming-to-the-core atmosphere, then you'll love this hotel. They pay great attention to detail in their ambiance and decorations (even the patio rocks in the garden have hand-painted fish)

If you're looking for a hotel with a big airconditioned lobby, and TV service in the rooms, and hot showers, and all the amenities of a big city hotel, then you probably should stay somewhere else.

What we loved:
Very peaceful and out-of-the way
Charming part of Bangkok, not too busy, but still fun to walk around (go feed the fish at the pier, it's a hoot)
Wonderful very artsy decorations
Kids loved the tropical courtyard and the organic garden on the roof
Had a fun play area for the kids
Food was quite good

What me missed:
Hot showers (their wall heaters never really got above lukewarm)
Variety of food (the menu of the cafe is very limited)
Spacious rooms (these rooms are quite small)

There you have it, if you know what to expect, this place can be a real charmer. If you like staying at the Marriott, then go find the Marriott.
