“Simply Charming”

The Waterfront Bophut

We stayed at the Waterfront for 11 nights in July and what a charming place it was! A darling little place of only 15 rooms (I believe) run by Sue who looked after us as if we were her only guests. The customer service was so that upon being shown our bungalow we noted a tree was slightly obscuring our view - the tree was promptly moved for us! For anyone considering going to the waterfront, do not expect a 5 star hotel experience because it is not. If it were it would not posses a fraction of the charm and character it does.

The pool is small but perfectly adequate, there is no inclination to swim 20meter lengths in this most relaxing place but if you did want to the ocean is only twenty or so steps away. The menu is extensive and Chef does the best breakfast pancakes! Bophut village is lovely, relaxed but with restaurants aplenty. We ate out every night, did not have a bad meal and never ate in the same place twice. A charming, relaxing place with an ideal location perfect for exploring the rest of Island and fully deserved of it ‘Asia’s Hidden Gem’ award. Thank you to all at The Waterfront.

We spent 4 nights at the Waterfront. Being the last stop of our 20 days tour in Thailand, The Waterfront was the perfect place to stay. They picked us up at the airport and showed the village, the restaurants and beach (everything within 5 minutes walking distance). Sue, the owner, and their friendly staff gave us a warm welcome and arrange some trips for us. In our last day we could stay longer in our room, had lunch in their wonderful terrace and returned us to the airport.

It is not a big resort (Koh Samui has plenty of them) but its size, owners, staff, the view… makes you feel different and special.

“Great relaxing break”

The Waterfront Bophut

We had a really great stay at the Waterfront. We chose it after reading various reviews on Tripadvisor on hotels in Bohput as were attending our friends wedding in the Six Senses Hideaway round in Samrung Bay.

After arriving in Koh Samui after a crazy few days in Bangkok, we were met by Michael, Robin and Sue’s son who gave us a quick tour of Bophut village and then back to the hotel. We were met by Sue (Robin was back in the UK) and given a really warm friendly welcome to the hotel, how it operates and a nice cold drink!
We were then shown to our room which was on the 1st floor (there is no second floor contrary to what the review below says, ground floor and first floor only!). The rooms are quite small but all you’re going to do is sleep in them! They are really nicely furnished and they have thought of everything. The bed was nice and firm, and the room was cleaned every day with fresh towels, dressing gowns and fresh flowers as well. The bathroom was an older style but nice and clean.

We ate in the hotel most days as the Thai food was great. We didn’t come on holiday to try the Western menu so can’t comment on that. We did have great plans most days of leaving the hotel but never really got around to leaving until the evening! The cocktails were great as well and considering we had a good few drinks, 2 lunches and a fair few bags of laundry done in our 12 night stay, the bill was next to nothing for what we got. We did manage past the pool before dinner a few times, one of which was to go on a sunset catamaran cruise. It’s pretty expensive for what you get (c. 3000 baht) but there are snacks and all you can drink so we probably got our money’s worth! It lasts for around 2 and a half hours but by the time we were done the sun still wasn’t down but we had fun. We went with two other couples from the hotel and had a good laugh diving off the side of the catamaran.

On returning home, most nights we had a night cap at the poolside bar and as Sue told us, it closes when the last person goes to bed.

We can't complain at all about the Waterfront at all, we had a great time, were treated like friends staying at another friends home, and it was exactly what we were looking for. A quiet, relaxing time in a small hotel. If you want somewhere with a big pool, go elsewhere but most guests (apart from the screaming bunch of Aussies who arrived on our third last day!!) were mindful of not hogging it or shouting across to others leaving you in peace.
The onsite masseuse is great and I am now missing my daily massages!!

If you want a quiet relaxing break at somewhere cosy and friendly then The Waterfront is the place for you. Sue will make you feel at home and you will come home feeling chilled, relaxed and planning your next trip back!

We were a group of friends gathering from several parts of the world for a 50th birthday celebration. From the time Michael collected the 14 of us, and our luggage, to the time they dropped us off, Sue, Michael and the staff were excellent.

On arrival at the hotel Sue had a cold drink waiting for us while she arranged for our luggage to be taken to our rooms.
The outlook from the hotel is spectacular, looking out to Koh Phangan. The pool is a little small, but quite sufficient. We didn’t spend much time lying around the pool during the day, just gathering there at the end of an adventure for a cocktail or beer at the bar.

The rooms are very nice and a good size. We had a ground floor room looking out to the sea, which was lovely. The bed was king size and very comfortable. The bedside lights are a little dim to read by, but we were usually too tired to read anyway. As in most hotel rooms there is no window to open, so you have to rely on air conditioning, but it was very warm and the air conditioning ensured a good night’s sleep. Clean linen, bath and beach towels were supplied everyday. Bodywash, shampoo, conditioner and hair dryer were also provided.

We were a large group so transport could have been a problem, but Sue arranged a mini bus for us whenever we needed one. Cost wise it worked out well for us, better and easier than taxis. The red ‘bus’ from Chaweng is a good means of travel back to BoPhut.

For the 50th birthday celebrations, Sue and the staff were fantastic. They decorated the birthday girl’s bed with flowers spelling out Happy 50th Birthday circled in a heart of petals. It was beautiful. We went out for cocktails and when we returned they had decorated the deck area with balloons and streamers (which we had supplied) so we could have dinner overlooking the sea. They did all the work for us - decorating the area and setting the party table - all we had to do was supply the party favours. We ordered in food as Cookie doesn’t work at night. Sue also arranged lanterns for us to light on the beach. This is a must if you stay at Koh Samui, but get Sue to arrange for them as they are much cheaper than buying from a shop. Our friend had a wonderful, memorable birthday party.

Breakfast was always a good start to the day with juice, fresh fruit, cereal and a hot breakfast provided. Other meals provided by Cookie were delicious, but I would stick to Thai cuisine as this is what Cookie does best. Don’t expect an Australian hamburger in Thailand, as you will be disappointed, not because of the cooking but because the meat is not the same as Australian meat. However, anything we ordered from the Thai menu was absolutely delicious. I would recommend a Pad Thai washed down with a Mai Tai by the pool.

The hotel is situated at one end of BoPhut Beach and it is a short stroll to restaurants, bars, shops and massage. We all went to the Relax Massage just up the street and were very pleased with the massage, manicures, pedicures and facials we had – all at very good prices. Shopping is OK at BoPhut but better at Chaweng as the street there goes on for ever, where BoPhut is a small village.

We ate at the Happy Elephant, Starfish and Coffee and the Italian Restaurant at night and all were very good, both the food and the value for money. As we were a big group we had to book to seat us all together, but they were happy to prepare our bills in smaller groups, which made it easier for us. Lunch at Johnny’s in the side street is excellent value and delicious food.

The younger ones in our group made good use of the Jet Skis down the beach and on the last day we all had a go. As we were a large group we hired a boat from the people who own the jet skis to take us to Koh Phangan for the day. Better value than going on an organised tour as we could go where we wanted in our own timeframe. Cold drinks and snorkelling gear are supplied as part of the cost and the boys on the boat were fantastic, both in the way they looked after us and the way they handled their boat. Very safe.

We played golf at Santiburi Golf Course which was a great experience. The course is quite difficult, but the young female caddies made it fun. The views from the course are spectacular.

All in all it was a great place for our group. Thanks to Sue, her family and the staff we had a holiday to remember.
