This church, located centrally in the old city of Jerusalem, is quite unlike any other. I am not a Christian, but like all places filled with history, intrigue and faith, it is an excellent place to visit. I would suggest that you go either with a tour group (these can be arranged locally) or do a lot of reading in advance. There are many unscrupulous 'guides' willing to charge you $50 for a 10 minute run through waiting at the door. This church has a lot of different things to see but if you go in without an understanding of the history or without a guide, you will be missing most of it. The very history behind the different religious groups who own and worship here is a story unto itself. The space is dark, the air filled with the scents of incense and a smoke haze wafts around many areas. The sounds of chanting, praying or rhythmic marching give this place its own atmosphere. If you are a Christian, I can't imagine you wouldn't visit here if you were in Jerusalem, if you are not, you would be missing out on what it is that makes Jerusalem the city it is if you didn't visit.
