“Not great but very friendly”

The Clarendon Hotel

On our way back from our Route 66 Road Trip from Texas to California we decided to stop by in Phoenix and take in a D-backs game. I want to first start off by saying (with the utmost respect) that Phoenix is friggin hot. When we got there it was around 110 degrees and my breath was taken away when i stepped out of the vehicle.

The outside of the Clarendon is not a great sight but once I got on the inside I was really impressed with the whole "ikea" looking style. The pool area looked inviting and the rooms were decorated very nicely. The problem occurred when we went to our room, the AC did not work very well at all. The staff downstairs was very helpful and they told us they would give us a new room. The new room wasn't any better but once again the staff was very helpful and allowed us to switch rooms again. They also said that we would be comped for anything we wanted to eat out of the snacks/drinks in the rooms. Once again the third room was still hot and the air didn't work again. I think we were a bit more agitated during the whole incident because we were hot and the baseball game started in about an hour. We finally decided we would just leave and look for another hotel nearby. The staff was still courteous and refunded our money right away.

Even though the we didn't stay I would still say that the staff at the Clarendon is very friendly and will help you in anyway they can. Also another downside was the construction and the non-working elevator. I found it hilarious though that in our last room we tried there was a huge painting of the scene from National Lampoons Vacation where Chevy Chase is standing ontop of their car in the middle of the desert. That basically summed up our whole evening in Phoenix.

Thanks for your review, as well as the wonderfully kind comments about our staff and overall service.

Please come back again soon, once the weather cools off, and enjoy our amazing pool area... named the best pool area in the valley by Phoenix Magazine in their September 2008 issue, or have a drink on our rooftop bar overlooking the city and surrounding mountains!

Sincerely,
Ben Bethel

“Don't Even Make Your Worst Enemy Stay Here”

The Clarendon Hotel

I booked this hotel through Travelocity and got double charged. Once from Travelocity on my business credit card and then again on my personal credit card. Neither company is easy to work with to get a refund for the double charged amount. The hotel was "cool" but dirty, in a low-income neighborhood, and nothing worked properly. All the air-conditioners in the rooms were broke (which is what the front desk staff said when I called to tell them my AC was not working properly) resulting in me turning my AC to 55 degrees just to get it to turn on, then running louder than a train wreck all night to spit out a measly amount of cool air on a 100+ degree night. When checking in they gave my reservation away which was a double bed room, and made me stay in a single bed room, with my co-worker - which as a married woman was an extremely awkward situation. And when I bring it up to them today after I called about the double booking charge they first told me that both the King rooms and Double rooms are "standard" so Travelocity can't tell the difference when making a reservation, and that they did my a favor by "upgrading" me to a king room. Obviously that's a contradiction (first a king bed and double room are standard, then the king room is an upgrade?), and I still have my Travelocity email confirmation which clearly stated a double room with 2 beds was reserved. + I remember clearly being able to choose which room type I wanted online. I wouldn't recommend staying at this hotel or having to go through this experience to my worst enemy.

    • Liked — That I made only a single night's reservation. Any longer, and I would have just picked up and left.
    • Disliked — The noise level was overwhelming from the pool area all night long, the AC's are old and don't work, the internet doesn't work, the staff is young and inexperienced in quality customer service.

Jaime,

Sorry to hear that you were charged twice.... Travelocity provides us with a virtual credit card number that the room should have been charged on. When you check out, it is always a good idea to look at your folio to prevent charges from going to the wrong credit card - yours in this case - as this would have prevented this from happening. Your incorrect charge should have been taken care of immediately.

I'd beg to differ that we're in a low income neighborhood - as one of the Valleys nicest high rise condo towers is directly across the street from us. We're also close to one of the nation's largest urban parks with walking/jogging trails, gardens, lakes and fountains. We're also close to the Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum.

We never would have "made you" stay in a single bedded room if you booked a double room. We would have even broken the reservation into two rooms and provided the 2nd room compliments of the house if no more double bedded rooms were available.

It is true that many online discount reservation services will book double rooms only, which is confusing for us - most of the time when we receive reservations for a double room, guests will arrive at the hotel wanting just one king bed. In the case of your reservation, it came to us as a double room with only 1 adult and no children... thus the reason we moved you to a king room. If the reservation was made with the correct number of adults traveling, we definitely would have saved you a room with two double beds.

I sincerely apologize for your experience.... in the future, please ask to talk to me - I won't bite, and I'm always going to do anything and everything possible to ensure that you have a wonderful experience at The Clarendon. Since your stay, our pool area was rated the best in the valley by Phoenix Magazine, and on this site we continue to be in the top five hotels with more than 50 reviews, out of literally hundreds of properties.

Not only has our pool received a number of awards lately, but our rooftop bar is also open with amazing views of the skyline and surrounding mountain ranges... an amazing place to watch our famous Arizona sunsets at the end of the day. Come back, take a look around and introduce yourself - I'm certain we can make you fall in love again!

Sincerely,
Ben Bethel

“Great for fun travel, a little less great for business travel”

The Clarendon Hotel

I stayed at the Clarendon during a business trip that included a little free time. The staff was super-friendly and helpful. The rooms are beautiful, the bed comfy, the bedsheets and pillows heavenly! Great TV, excellent pool. There was lovely local art in the restaurant and lobby. A few small negatives - the pool is open until midnight and so my second floor poolside room was a little noisy a bit later than I was expecting. I asked to be moved to a quieter room the next night and all was well until I discovered that the free in-room wireless Internet wasn't working there. Seems it works better in some of the rooms than others, but was always available in the lobby (where there's a computer and a printer for general use). The restaurant food was good but service was a little slower than I had hoped as a business traveler. One day there was an issue with the air conditioner and the rooms were warm overnight - luckily they had it fixed the next day. Business travel amenities were absent (no daily papers, no bill under your door on the last day, no notice of the checkout time in the room, no breakfast buffet). I would definitely stay at the Clarendon again for personal travel (rate was $84!) but for business I might go elsewhere.

We just got back from Phoenix yesterday. We were there for a long weekend. We stayed at the Calrendon for 4 nights. When we checked in we were upgraded to a suite which was awesome. We didn't request an upgrade the hotel just gave it to us. Check in was easy and fast - front desk staff is very accomodating and friendly. The building is old but the decor and atmopshere is great. Everything is very clean.

“Great Hotel for the Price”

The Clarendon Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Denver, Colorado
May 17, 2008

I stayed at the Clarendon recently for a business trip and took the advice of other Tripadvisors reviews. I was a little hesitant because the reviews were a mixed bag. Fortunately I would have to say I was one who throughly enjoyed this hotel and definetly would come back.

To start off, the hotel is a little off center. It is in the middle of a neighborhood and not really close to much. The main entrance doors were broken, and when I entered the other doors, a man was photographing a young women for I don't know what. Moving past that, the people who worked there were extremely nice and helpful. They upgraded my room to a Junior Suite. Score. The room was huge, and the bed was a very comfortable king size bed. The bathroom was fine with boutique beauty products and nice decor, but the bathtub was a little dirty. The room and the hotel are definetly colorful with lots of artwork, but I thought it looked really nice and modern. The room was clean and it came with a 42" flat screen TV with HD, cable, and DVR!!! The wireless internet was really fast when I first got there, which is rare for me, but at night did not really work at all.

The hotel is provided with an amazing looking pool in the central courtyard. I unfortunately didn't use it, but If I had more time, I definetly would of. The bar looked nice, and the upstairs bar was closed at the time of the visit (a little disappointing, but it was Tuesday).

I ate Breakfast at the restaurant the next morning, and it was good, but a little pricey.

Overall this was a great hotel and I would definetly recommend this to anyone coming to Phoenix. It was especially good for the deal (less then $100).
