“When You Travel on a Budget and you get a GreatRroom”

On a recent business to Modesto I wanted to stay at a hotel under $70 . I first booked a Choice Hotel the Roadway Inn in Modest. To keep this post short it was a disaster. Frankly, it was my worst hotel experience in over 5 years of traveling. Planned to stay the week but checked out first thing the next morning. I soon discovered the Vagabond Inn about a mile away. For $55 I got a very nice room with the amenities you would expect in a hight price 2 to 3 star hotel. Vagabond Inns tend to be older remodeled hotels. But what they lack in exterior appearance they more then make up when you close the door. My 4 star rating is based on a very nice room at a budget price.

this hotel is fairly nice and is in a good location to all things in the area. it has a denneys restauraunt on the premises and a wendys right next door to that and a sonic right across the street and many shopping venues all around the area. the inn itself has a nice pool area with plenty of room around it for sun bathing, etc. they advertise the pool as heated but it is NOT. the rooms are basic and are clean although i would not leave anything of value inside the room if leaving for the day as the doors are not very secure in my opinion. by no means did i feel unsafe during my stay as the area seemed pretty nice. if asked if i would stay here again i would probably say yes. also the ice machines were not working during the length of my stay.

    • Disliked — non heated pool ( broucher said it was ) and no working ice machines.

Vagabond Inn

Past experiences with Heritage Inns & Vagabondhave always been satsifactory; so no problem with booking there. Needed to be close to hospital, which it is.

Price quoted on the phone (AAA) was not the price I was charged upon checkout. (Ten dollars more per nite). Because of unexpected extended visit (due to husbands surgery), each day I called in to renew for another nite, I was required to come to the office and re-sign in; and each day they did forgot to renew my door key...which meant an additional trip to the office.

This happened repeatedly four days. I was told the keys are "one day only" keys.

Although the place is not new, it is terrible condition inside. The tub had no plug to hold water; the sink in the bathroom also was not able to hold water (in-op plug). The toilet barely flushed; had to hold the handle down each time. The toilet tank l lid apparently had been broken before and had been replaced with a tank lid that belonged to another type of toilet. Did not even have the same shape so did not fit closed. (Could see water through the sidesof the tank lid).

The door molding had been torn off at some time and never was fixed. Therefore, sunshine shown through the 1" gap all around. This was the same in my daughter's room next door.

One could see that maintenance was of a low priority. Even though I had notified the office I was staying over; approximately at 11:30 A.M. a housekeeper would knock on the door and yell "housekeeping!" to ask if you were staying over! This was aggrevating, since I had been up very late at the hospital, and had already noticed the office. This happened each and every day of my stay.

It was not an experience I would prefer to repeat. I will not ever likely stay at the Modesto Heritage (Vagabond) ever again. Nor would I recommend it to family or friends.

    • Liked — Close to the hospital
    • Disliked — Inconvience of daily renewal policies; low room maintenance priorities.

“Okay if you don't need anything fancy”

Vagabond Inn

2 of 5 stars
Danville Ca.
Jan 23, 2008

Area is near the local hospital. I came in after dark but everything was closed and no trouble makers out and about that I could see. Room clean, bed poorly made.
Towles looked dingy. Other than that, it's clean a little on the older side but functional.
Took dog for small fee greatly appreciated that. Felt safe walking dog in the dark. Denny's next door.
