I learned something with my 4 night stay at Island City House.....you're either a bed and breakfast type traveler or you're a corporate chain hotel type traveler and I might be the later.
This hotel was charming and old, quiet, well kept, clean and well decorated. Lugging our heavy bags up to the 3rd floor with no elevator or help was awful with our bad backs and we wouldn't do it again.
Our room in the main Island City House building was very nice and our porch area was lovely. I enjoyed sitting there one evening with a book and one of the many hotel cats curled up at my side. The gardens and grounds are lush and well tended. The pool is very small and the surrounding area not too inviting, but it did the trick when we needed a dip one evening.
Having a kitchen was nice, but we didn't really use it, except to keep bottles of water in the fridge. The bathroom had virtually no place to set your stuff so I had to bring one of the folding luggage racks in and then place a towel over it so things wouldn't fall through. The front door window had a lace curtain over it with no way to cover it at night and it looked straight into the bathroom! We safety pinned a towel to it at night. The floors creaked terribly, so if you think you're going to sneak up in the middle of the night for a drink of water and not wake up your spouse, forget it.
Breakfast in the courtyard was lovely but the offerings were slim. We got way more at the Holiday Inn in Fort Lauderdale. There was yogurt, whole fruit, a bagel or croissant everyday, maybe cinnamon buns, as well as toast, 2 juice choices, coffee or tea - that's it. Don't get me wrong - it was plenty for anyone, but I would have liked some form of protein other than the yogurt. Cereal would have been nice.
Parking at ICH is horrible, so don't plan on being able to park nearby unless you get lucky. There are very, very strict parking rules.
We paid $180.00 per night for 2 of our nights and $153.00 for the other 2 (plus taxes, of course) which are off season prices, I believe, and fair.
If you want something historical, charming and quiet, stay here. If you want comfort and convenience, stay elsewhere.
