I know this is a little late, but a friend of mine asked me about the Doral experience and I told him, "No way". Here are my thoughts about Doral. I am an avid golfer with a 9 handicap and have played some true golf course "gems" over time, but Doral is not one of them. Let me start with the golf courses:
Red course: Looks like and plays like a public track that charges about $28 a round. Sort of ho-hum, hairy greens and just not much to talk about.
White course: A Greg Norman re-design, and he should be ashammed that his name is on it. The greens are terrible, the layout is "squirrely" and take a good book, because the pace of play is beyond belief. And don't count on the ranger moving people along. This course was so bad, that the head of our golfing party (there were 40 of us) complained and the pro shop gave us all a complimentary round on the Gold Course whcih we were playing the next day, so they took the charge off of our bill. (nice gesture).
Gold Course: Not much better than the other two and I was kind of shocked that the PGA had the Q-School here a few years back. The only good hole on this course is the 18th. A great finishing hole, especially when you are betting.
The Blue Monster: A nice course, but not worth the money. It has some good holes, but all in all, I have probably played 75 courses that would blow this course away.
Pro Shop: Nice place with lots of inventory, but bring plenty of money. My friend thought he may need a few more balls for our final round, so he ran into the pro shop before we teed off to buy some Pro V's. At $95/dozen, the pro shop really likes these balls. Pack an extra dozen if you decide to come to this over-priced golf shop.
Silver Course: This is the "members" course at Doral and if you get a chance to play it, do it. I think that this is the best course on the resort.
Hotel: As everyone has previously stated, the place is very old and needs help. They do have nice grounds, but it is Miami, so that is more mother nature tham the resort itself.
Food and Beverage: Super over priced. I mean, $25 for hamburger, chips and a coke. $17 for rail cocktails. When we went to check out, they told my roomate and myself that we had a $145 mini bar charge in our room. We explained to the front desk that we didn't touch any beer/liquor in our room. Guess what, the water bottles in our room cost about $7.50 a piece.
In short, Doral is over-rated, over-priced and just not worth the cost. I will never go back to Doral. Look at other places!
