“Tennis Players Will Love the Hyatt”

Our family recently traveled to Maui for the first time and spent a week at the Hyatt Regency. We have three children, 12, 14, 17 and we all had an outstanding experience and hope to return soon. One of the highlights of the week was the time we spent with the tennis pro, Frank Salvador. All of us play tennis and we travel extensively. We always take our raquets and take advantage of any instruction offered at the various hotels in which we stay. The tennis program at the Hyatt was tremendous. Frank hosted clinics every morning and we participated in all of them. The clinics were fun, instructive and challenging. He was very adept at incorporating a variety of skill levels within the class and kept everyone interested and moving. Our two oldest daughters are high level players and they are very particular about the instruction they receive. They requested private lessons with Frank which they enjoyed immensely. He has a terrific sense of humor, an impressive resume and we all learned a great deal from him.

I have to say we did sooo much research before we choose the Hyatt. And, afte some of the reviews we were a little scared. It was not our first choice, we were thinking Westin, Sheraton, or Marriott. We are sooo glad we chose the Hyatt.

We have stayed at other very nice hotels (Ritz, Boston) and this was just as nice but diff. atmosphere. The grounds are beautiful, the lobby breathtaking, pool is wonderful. We did have a small room issue when we got there. But, they were very happy to let us look at a couple other rooms and choose the one we wanted. We had deluxe ocean view rm. 828 Napilli tower...great room with a great view. I can NEVER sleep in a hotel (only in the Ritz) did I sleep like a baby.......I think these beds beat that!! They are heavenly! Our couples massage (Hot Stone) was out of this world, I felt like I was floating when we left there. We never had a prob. with chairs at the pool and we always at break. first at Sonz. I woke up and couldnt wait to go eat it was great. Yes, there are small birds flying around and if you dont know better and leave your plate they will swarm...it is actually kind of funny to watch and we always knew who the new guests were. But, the waiters come right away and take the plate away. If you have to get up, just use your napkin to cover your plate and you should be good. We also did Warren & Annabells Magic show...hilarious! Helicopter tour ( 1 hr ) great views, Sunset sail on the Hyatts boat..
.I was so scared but it was awsome. Ate at Capische'..very very good, Mamas fish house....so so, Tropica...excellent with a sunset view. Kimos on Front Street...very good. Willing to answer any questions, just ask and i got plenty of pics. Alreay planning on going back for whale season with the kids....cant wait

“Terrible Hotel”

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

Aug 12, 2008
5/11 found this review helpful

This is my first time writing a review, but we had such a bad experience here on our honeymoon (first week of Aug'08) that I decided it was necessary to warn others before considering staying here yourself. Here are all the issues we had with the hotel:

1. Had to switch rooms 3 times. We booked an ocean view room and they put us into a partial ocean view room and lied to us saying this was ocean view. Especially annoying considering how much we had to pay to stay in this hotel.

2. The second room we got actually was ocean view and had two nice balconies. The problem with this room was that we saw a cocroach when we came back to the room at night as well as pieces of a twizzler and M&Ms by the dresser and curtains.

3. The rooms and hotel are run down and in desperate need of an upgrade. Drapes are stained, tvs are old and get terrible reception, carpet is stained, etc... Also, in the tower we stayed in which is the main one, one of the elevators is out and based on what I was told from the bell hop, it will be out for 3 months then they will be doing the same to the other elevators. In other words, for a long time 1 of 3 elevators will not be operating causing long waits just to go back and forth to your room.

4. They rip you off with a lot of hidden fees. $15 resort fee per day + $20 fee per day for valet parking. Self-parking is not really an option here since there are very few spots.

5. The pool is extremely crowded and unless you get a chair by 8AM you will have problems finding one. Also the chairs are very close together and hardly any have shade or some covering over them like other hotels. If you're on your honeymoon or just looking to relax by the pool, watch out. There are a ton of kids here that take over all parts of the pool. No section for just adults exists.

6. There is construction right next to the pool with noise you can hear being drowned out by loud music they have playing to cover up the noise. This area also takes up a decent portion of the area around the pool.

7. The beach is a joke. Hardly any sand and very rocky. We walked to the other side of Kannapali Beach where the Sheraton is (which by the way is a much nicer resort).

Bottom line, we made a huge mistake spending our honeymoon here and paying the outrageous prices for this hotel and getting very little for our money other than a lot of stress. This hotel is the complete opposite of the Grand Hyatt Kauai which is what a resort should be like and what this place is not.

Arrived and informed about valet/self parking. We chose self and never had a problem finding parking( stay was only 3 nights). Checked in and paid an unbelievable low price for an upgrade to ocean front regency club suite.Elevators worked fine( they have a bowl of candy there everyday?!)( we used the stairs for exercise), room was 21st floor atrium tower, corner suite with 2 balconies, sitting area , king bed, frig, robes, twin sinks, evening turn-down service. Toilet and shower together in a VERY small space. Mauna Loa candy and photo album arrived compliments of management.Regency club includes evening snacks and cocktails, morning continental breakfast, afternoon cookies and drinks. It was perfect! The hotel is wonderful to walk around in with all the birds, plants, bridges, pool is fantastic with waterfalls, swim up bar in grotto, a sand beach ,swinging bridge, kiddy area, deepest area of pool is 9 feet, juccuzi near pool. Had lunch at only restaurant opened besides pool area, both had chicken salads that were ok, that was our only meal at the Hyatt. The construction everyone is talking about is at the pool, they are building another restaurant, it does not impact the hotel stay at all in my opinion. After walking the path towards Whalers Village, realized Hyatt has no beach, just a small area to the left of the resort, that is where the fitness center is( huge, modern), and also where to go for jet-skis.Hammocks on the grounds, cabanas for rent, both are great for watching the sunset. Only one day the pool police were in force. They first place a note on your chaise of the time and state that your belongings will be removed in one hour, it took about two hours for this to happen as the couple next to us came back just in time as they came around. We agreed with them to watch each other for the day.Heard construction noise but with the pool music, waterfalls, etc… it drowned it out, plus we were sitting right next to it, very few shaded areas.Arm bands are given to you when you get pool towels Cold towels and ice pops passed around the pool. The hotel has a Macys which has tons of bathing suits, + mens and women resort wear.Viewed a wedding near the flamingo area one day, they beat drums, blow conch shell, looked very nice. We did laundry one day, $2 wash,$2 dry, soap for purchase.Lobby level. A very pleasant experience.

This place is definitely overrated. When we first arrived they put us in a "partial oceanfront" which actually overlooked the parking lot. When we addressed this issue to the staff they offered us an oceanview upgrade and then would not allow us to take it. They said the upgrade was a mistake and tried to put us in another partial oceanview room in a wing of the hotel which had a completely broken elevator. By the time we headed back to the lobby check in time took two hours. They were not really apologetic and the staff seemed burnt out except for one person after the third complaint about the room tried to take us to another room that overlooked the mountains. We ran into a concierge during our stay from the Four Seasons who said he had an ocean view room that he was staying in last minute for the whole weekend for one hundred dollars a night. So much for why they had no ocean view rooms available for paying guests..
We will never go back. This was our third trip to Mauii and by far the worst with regards to the hotel. This hotel is run down. we'd recommend driving to hana and staying there.
